If you have questions regarding mentoring in Butterflies then book an online meeting with our first mentor Nikolaj Lisberg Hansen, who is responsible for knowledge sharing between mentors.
Peer-to-peer learning with a senior developer as mentor
In Butterflies we create online communities for peer-to-peer learning with a senior developer as mentor, to give new developers real work experience on complex projects.
We focus on providing high quality mentoring to fewer members in groups of 3-5 people. Mentors spend 4 hours/week finding tasks on shared source projects, sending links to articles and meeting with their online community 2 hours/week to discuss articles and their tasks.
As a mentor you will guide members in working as individual IT-professionals and as part of an agile team. There is no curriculum, the mentors decide what to teach based on their knowledge using existing shared source projects in Butterflies, open source projects or by creating their own projects of interest.
Members should learn to think beyond their current task, ask the right questions and understand why we are doing things in a certain way. Members should practice Chrome developer tools, Visual Studio Code debugging, GitHub pull requests and when to use AI code assistants or design tools to communicate ideas.
Mentor contract and insurance
The mentor contract is written in Danish and simply states the extend of volunteer work you will be doing, that is needed for the Butterflies mentor ensurance policy. You can always change the contract if your life situation changes and if you have any questions the Butterflies board will be happy to answer them.
When working as a volunteer mentor in Butterflies, we are legally required to give you a contract just like any regular employee, that describes the period and hours per week you intent to work. The contract states you are not entitled to any salary, but you are covered by Butterflies professional responsibility and work accident insurances, that are regally required even for volunteers.
New mentors will be asked to provide their full name, e-mail and mobile phone, to be shared with the Butterflies members they will be teaching online or in person.
New mentors will be askled to provide personal identification and legal documents required to draft the legally required contract, with mentors working in jobs similar to employees. This private information is only shared with the Butterflies board members, for the sole purpose of drafting the contract to make sure the volunteer mentor is covered by appropriate Butterflies insurances.
